The Institute of Molecular Medicine was established by Professor Sir David Weatherall in 1989 in the Clinical School of the University of Oxford to foster research in molecular and cell biology with direct application to the study of human disease. This field of research has grown in a very exciting way during the lifetime of the Institute and is having a considerable impact on our understanding and treatment of many diseases. We are proud to be at the forefront of this endeavour. The Institute is thriving and now houses around four hundred scientists, all working on important human diseases ranging from Cancer to AIDS. The three main sponsors of research in the Institute are the University of Oxford, The Medical Research Council and Cancer Research UK. Significant funding also comes from the Wellcome Trust and other medical research charities.

In 2000 the Institute was renamed the Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine.

The Institute is an exciting place and this web site gives a flavour of that. It gives details of the work of each current research group with details of how to contact them. The site also gives background on how the Institute works and information on how to apply to work here.

We are grateful to a Wellcome Trust grant for the Public Understanding of Science, which enabled us to develop this website and produce the brochure.
